UNIVERSITY OF UTAH - Seasonal Gardener Positions University Student Apartments

Responsibilities:

  • Duties of this position include, but are not limited to:
  • Picking up leaves and debris.
  • Assisting with tree and shrub pruning projects.
  • Assisting full-time gardeners with other grounds duties.
  • Lawn care (mowing, edging, etc.).
  • Picking up trash around dumpsters and on grounds.
  • Other duties as required.
    This is a seasonal, temporary, non-benefited position that can be used for positions six months or less.

    TETON TREES - Perennial and Shrub Manager
    Teton Trees is currently looking for a grower to oversee all aspects of our Perennial and Shrub growing operations. Qualified candidates should be willing to accept a challenge and work till the job is done. The most important qualifications for the job include: A dedication to growing beautiful plants, a progressive attitude towards innovative ideas, willingness to continually improve growing systems and processes, and a team centered attitude. As the manager of the Perennial and Shrub operation the candidate must be willing to accept the following responsibilities:
    • Procure, plant, grow and maintain all perennials and shrubs in a sellable state
    • Work together with the Sales team to forecast the correct plants to grow for upcoming seasons
    • Handle all ordering, purchasing and procurement of plant liners from vendors
    • Run a crew of up to 15 crew members
    • Oversee all aspects of plant health and plant lifecycle including:
    ◦ Planting of all shrubs and perennials
    ◦ Organize and maintain a Chemical/Fertilization plan for all perennials and shrubs
    ◦ Organize and maintain an irrigation plan for all perennial and shrub plant material
    ◦ All weed control measures
    ◦ Pruning and plant maintenance
    ◦ Winter protection and care
    • Review all out going plant material to ensure amazing product to the customer
    • Travel to trade shows and other educational opportunities
    • Be willing to do whatever it takes to ensure live, quality, healthy perennials and shrubs for Teton Trees

    TETON TREES - Internal/External Sales Position
    The Internal/External Sales Position will be responsible for handling assigned sales accounts and helping outside sales persons with whatever tasks are required to meet sales and profit goals. The Internal/External Sales Position will be required to:
    • Handle all aspects of assigned customer accounts including:
    ◦ All communication with customer
    ◦ Timely orders and estimates
    ◦ Aggressively upsell and sub every item possible
    ◦ Be willing to source material when appropriate
    ◦ Communicate all needs promptly with the shipping department
    ◦ Do quality checks on the dock
    ◦ Have a next action step for each customer for future growth
    • Be proactive in finding new customers within any areas assigned by the sales manager.
    • Keep a running sales log to be reviewed by Sales Manager and General Manager every week. Must include:
    ◦ Contact time of every customer contacted that week
    ◦ Contact report of every potential customer contacted that week
    ◦ Future contact plan for all potential and current customers
    ◦ Next step action to be taken with each potential and current customer
    • Be able to assist outside sales reps in any issues they may require, such as:
    ◦ Take Pictures
    ◦ Write up Orders and Estimates
    ◦ Do quality/quantity checks
    ◦ Flag material when necessary
    • Update and Report any statistical information as assigned by the Sales Manager

    Job Requirements
    • 1-3 years business to business sales experience preferred
    • Experience with QuickBooks and/or the ability to learn new programs quickly
    • Aggressive and energetic personality with the drive to bring in new sales

  • JORDAN VALLEY WATER CONSERVANCY - Conservation Garden Park, seasonal assistant horticulturist
    Job Summary: Performs landscape maintenance on a 6.5 acre water conservation demonstration garden, conducts tours of the garden and provides assistance as needed for water conservation program activities such as garden fairs, plant sales, booths at community events, and classes.

    Job Requirements:

  • Two years of college-level classes in horticulture or an equivalent degree and general knowledge of horticulture and waterwise gardening. Individuals with extensive garden or landscape experience will also be considered.
  • Ability to share information with the public in an enthusiastic manner to promote awareness and interest in waterwise landscaping.
  • A basic knowledge of plant materials and maintenance.
  • Able to work outdoors in full sun for extended periods.

    Hours: Part-Time and full-time positions are available from April through October. Must be able to work a varied schedule including evenings, weekends, and some holidays.

    RED BUTTE GARDEN - Assistant Horticulturist to assist with all maintenance and care for our Entrance Gardens, Cottam’s Grove, Wildflower Meadow and Natural Areas
    The purpose of this position is to assist the Crewleader in providing all care for the assigned areas. Assists in identifying, prioritizing and implementing required landscape maintenance and living plant collections care needs, with a strong focus on native and water wise plants and natural area management, while assuring that maintenance activities do not conflict with private and garden events.     RED BUTTE GARDEN - Landscape Gardener Crewleader for our Terrace (Herb, Medicinal & Fragrance) and Water Pavilion Gardens
    This is a working supervisory position responsible for the management and care of an assigned area within Red Butte Garden. including the living plant collections held within. Responsible for identifying, prioritizing and implementing required maintenance needs in the assigned area, living plant collection and the training and supervision of seasonal staff and volunteers in performing those duties. Duties include: landscape designs, plant installation, all aspects of maintenance and preservation care for assigned areas and their living plant collections, snow removal, event support and all other duties as required to support the mission of Red Butte Garden.
    Assures that maintenance activities do not impact scheduled private and/or Garden events. Hires, trains and supervises seasonal employees; provides performance feedback and disciplines as necessary. Assures gardening practices are water and resource wise. Assures safe practices, operation of equipment, applications of pesticides as necessary.

    UTAH STATE UNIVERSITY (USU) - 9-month non-tenure track lecturer position
    Horticulture and Plant Sciences Plants, Soils and Climate Department, College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences
    Position Summary
    Utah State University (USU) and the Department of Plants, Soils and Climate (PSC) is seeking applicants for a full-time, 9-month non-tenure track lecturer position (85% teaching and 15% service) in horticulture and plant sciences. This salaried position requires a base load of teaching face-to-face courses on-campus and teaching via distance education to off-campus students. Opportunities exist to supplement the salary through teaching extra-curricular courses off-campus. Service responsibilities include being the faculty advisor to the Plant Science Club, assisting with student internship programs, and overseeing PSC greenhouse and outdoor teaching facilities. Applications will be accepted until position is filled, but review will begin on August 15, 2017. Expected start date for this position is January 1, 2018.
    Responsibilities

  • Instruction in topics related to ornamental horticulture such as Horticulture, Plant Materials, Landscape Construction, Arboriculture, Greenhouse Management, Garden Center Management, Pest Management, Horticultural Business Management, and Landscape Irrigation Design. Actual teaching responsibilities will be negotiated with the candidate based on expertise.
  • Supervise the PSC teaching greenhouse and outdoor teaching facilities.
  • Mentor students and student club activities and internships.
    Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in ornamental horticulture, plant science, public garden management, plant pathology, landscape architecture, or closely related field.
  • Passion for landscape horticulture and an eagerness to share this passion via teaching and service.
  • An ability to work with faculty in an interdisciplinary department setting.
    Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience teaching undergraduate courses.
  • Professional experience outside academia in landscape horticulture or closely related field.
  • Formal pedagogical training.
