Introduction: As cities continue to heat up due to climate change and expanding concrete infrastructure, nature-based solutions are emerging as essential tools for building urban resilience. This presentation will explore the role of urban green infrastructure, particularly street trees and vines, in cooling cities and enhancing environmental quality. Speakers will discuss how vegetation helps mitigate urban heat islands by providing shade, lowering surface and air temperatures, and supporting biodiversity. Special emphasis will be placed on the role of vines, which offer unique cooling benefits for vertical surfaces and are well-suited for space-limited urban environments. Join us to learn how strategic greening can contribute to more sustainable and climate-resilient cities.

Our presenter Our presenter Dr. Alessandro Ossola is an Associate Professor at UC Davis and an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Melbourne. His work focuses on urban and peri-urban ecology, covering topics such as forestry, water management, and sustainable planning and design. He is a 2022 recipient of the FFAR New Innovator Award and formerly served as a US National Academies NRC Associate at the US EPA. Dr. Ossola also advises government agencies at multiple levels on urban land management and environmental policy. Other Presenter, Jared Sisneroz is a first-year Ph.D. student in the Geography Graduate Group at UC Davis, with a background in Landscape Architecture. For last 15 years he has worked on projects related to greenhouse crops, urban runoff, and pest control outreach, with a primary focus on managing the UC Landscape Plant Irrigation Trials. Jared is interested in how plants fit into larger conversations around water-use, and human wellbeing in urban environments.
