Introduction: Across the west, landscapes are rapidly evolving to meet urgent water conservation goals, with turf grass removal leading the charge. However, replacing lawn with bare soil or unshaded rock surfaces can raise concerns about compounding the urban heat island effect. This presentation explores the mechanics of urban heat island creation and demonstrates how strategic plant choices can mitigate these effects. Learn how to evaluate canopy coverage against water consumption and walk away with ideas to select high-performing, shade-maximizing plants that keep soil cool and landscapes sustainable.

Ryan White

Our Presenter:  For over a decade, Ryan White has managed Red Hills Desert Garden, showcasing vibrant desert-adapted plants and welcoming the public to unique seasonal events. He leverages this community programming to foster strong local connection and active engagement around water conservation. Through these initiatives, Ryan seeks to influence regional landscaping norms so outdoor spaces better reflect local environmental realities. His work proves that water-efficient landscapes can be just as attractive and enjoyable as they are sustainable. Ryan holds a Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture from Utah State University.
